Surfguiding Peniche
As one of the most consistent surfing sports in Europe, the peninsula of Peniche provides best conditions throughout the whole year.
Here you can learn surfing right from the beginning as well as take your surfing skills to new heights. The Germans Sebbo and Rainer
will be happy to guide you in small groups of 8 people max.

Accommodation
For only 70€ per week you can rent one of the three free beds in Rainer and Sebbo’s house. From there you can easily get to many
spots on foot ( see “Surfing” ). The terraced house disposes of a living room, a kitchen, two bathrooms, a garage and a barbecue area.
Of course, washing machine, TV, DVD and high speed internet connection are available as well.
Just across the street you’ll find the self-catering Appartamentos de Senhora Bachofen which also are fully equipped. Depending
on the season and the number of guests (5 max.), you can rent them for 200€ to 540€ per week.
Further accommodation facilities in Peniche are among others the two hotels Atlantis (15-35€ per night) and Baleal a Vista
(14-24€ per night) as well as the local camping site (5€ per day from July to September).
Those of you travelling by camper van can also simply stay on the parking lot near the beach. This is totally legal in Portugal!

Surfing
There are over 20 different surfing spots in the Peniche area, so everybody from beginner to pro will find some suiting waves.
Moreover, there will always be spots with offshore wind, so a day without surfable waves is very unlikely in Peniche.
The best seasons for surfing are spring and autumn, whereas the weather usually is less stable in spring and there are fewer
surfers in the line-ups in autumn. During summer, the waves are smaller but the water is warmer and the parties are longer.
During winter however, you will meet less people to party with – but benefit from empty line-ups.
Here’s a little selection of the spots in close reach:
Bruno’s Bar
Cantinho
Lagido
Middle of the Bay
Prices (surf courses)
Sebbo and Rainer offer surf guiding in three different categories: Basic, Premium and Deluxe.
Basic (60€ per person and week)
From November to April, daily tours go to all the spots from Praia d’el Rey to Ericeira according to tides. The basic program
consists of explanations about the dangers of every spot and of valuable advice on how to surf them. Required qualifications are
knowledge of the right-of-way rules, secure take-off and bottom turn with subsequent parallel ride.
Premium (125€ per person and week)
The Premium package comprises all the features of the basic surf guiding plus extensive teaching in theory and practice according
to your current surfing skills. The lessons are exclusively taught by Rainer and Sebbo, whereas there will be 4 students max per
instructor. Video analyses are carried out twice a week.
The Premium courses are divided into the levels beginners, intermediates and advanced surfers. There is also a special
course for longboarders.
Deluxe (400€ per person and week)
The basic offer is extended with individual and intensive tuition - 2 instructors guide 2 students. Video analyses, board and
wetsuit are included for the whole week. While one of the instructors is guiding you, the other will record the entire session for
subsequent video analysis. The course’s goals are set individually at the beginning of the week and then attacked step by step.
The region
The town of Peniche has about 20.000 inhabitants and is situated on a peninsula on the western coast of Portugal. Lisbon is
about 120 kilometres away by car. The largest part of the peninsula is characterized by cliff lines north and south of which there are
long sand beaches. Since the Middle Ages, Peniche has been an important fishing port, today it is the country’s second largest
transhipment point for sardines. Furthermore tourism has gained certain importance.
The town’s most popular sights are the Forte da Consolação, a fortress from the 17th century which today serves as a museum,
and the baroque church Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda. Also the surrounding areas are always worth a trip, e.g. the town of
Óbidos with its castle and the walkable city wall from 1527, the grottos of the Berlengas Islands or the skate park of Lourinha.
How to get there
Germanwings, Easyjet and the Portuguese airline TAP fly from many European cities directly to Lisbon (Ryan Air only flies to Porto).
Especially during off-peak season from October to April you will get return flight tickets for less than 100€. From Lisbon you can get a
coach to Peniche at the bus terminal „Sete Rios“. The travel time is about 1.5 hours and a one-way ticket is less than 10€. You can also
take a taxi, of course, but that will easily cost you more than 100€. You can get more information on Surfguiding Peniche’s website.
